"Secrets" of a Maestro

The first time I met Maestro Julio Enrique Ayán Rial, I had recently graduate as journalist. He was waiting for us at the gates of the former storehouses “Bacardí”, in Santiago de Cuba, to speak with us about something we thought we knew, but it was actually a complete discovery.

César Adames

César Adames, Brazilian journalist with great prestige as a rum critic among the producers of the continent, gave an exclusive interview to Cuba Ron.

The stand of Cuba Ron was among the most attractive ones at the Havana International Fair, 2015. That's why it received the following awards: Gold Medal for the quality of Rum Isla del Tesoro; Publicity Award in the category of audiovisual media, Award to the Stand of Best Free Design.

Cuban cocktails have a worldwide fame. Every drink has a different and singular history, and besides, a common denominator: Cuban rum. With classical Cuban cocktails which are distinguished worldwide, there are others which are very popular too. Cuban cocktail tradition is thousand-year-old. Since independence wars rebels have already been making those drinks.

Rum tradition of the center of the country is summarized in Cubay rum. This is one of the most relevant light rums of the country.

Cuban drinks have an international renown. Cocktails have come to Cuban culture to be a part of the identity. To make some of these drinks the best thing is to use Cuban rum, especially White Mature or White Card, in order to make the authentic flavor of a creole cocktail.

Scent and flavor of Cuban rum have given it many deserved awards and acknowledgments. Cuba Rum is the entity in charge of its production and commercialization. In Cuba, rum is symbolic product of its tradition and culture. It is closely linked, since its birth, to the charms of this land, the enterprising spirit and good taste of Cuban people of all times.

Mojito is the main drink in La Bodeguita del Medio. This refreshing drink history dates from XVI century when the pirate and slaves trader Francis Drake prepared the first known version of a drink that had eau-de-vie, sugar, lemon and mint. It was known as "The Draque" in his honor.

Daiquiri is a Cuban traditional drink. Its variants and history make it unique in Cuban cocktails. It was Ernest Hemingway's favorite drink. According to what people say, its name comes from a beach near Santiago de Cuba in a mine zone.

To honor Havana many cocktails have been created. Cuban rum taste makes these drinks unique in their kind. Havana is a really mixed city because of the mix of agriculture, people, sea smell, parks, history and religious syncretism. All that, mixed at the same time with discos and hotel chains and music, paintings, dancing, and literature.
